What is a Houseman & What Does He or She Do?
A houseman is generally tasked to handle the daily “hands on” duties in a residence, and is often counted on to help ensure the smooth and orderly running of a residence. Typical houseman job responsibilities can include heavy housework, such as:
- Cleaning floors
- Vacuuming
- Polishing silver
- Accepting heavy deliveries
- Moving furniture and other items
A houseman’s job may include the additional duties of chauffeur/driver, cook, and valet. He or she may also fill in for the housekeeper if he or she calls in sick, watch the children, or assist the chef in preparation and serving for a formal dinner party.
Additionally, a houseman’s responsibilities may require him or her to care for the core grounds of a residence, including the main entry area of the house and the walkways. In a household in which there is only a houseman (i.e., not additional domestic staff), the houseman also typically does what a housekeeper would be required to do. In residences that have broader domestic staffs, the houseman may also serve as a “right-hand man” to an estate/household manager or to another domestic staff leader.
